Swamping Insight

This is a common system structure of an upstream service handing over to a downstream service that includes return or relapse back to the upstream service. This simulation explores the unintended effects of increasing upstream capacity and swamping downstream capacity. An upstream service responds to an increased load by increasing its capacity. This improved throughput from the upstream service swamps the downstream service. In addition, the increase in the relapse rate due to insufficient downstream capacity eventually returns to swamp upstream capacity as well. In the model we have the options to continually change upstream and downstream entry and upstream and downstream capacity.
